It would be a fantastic idea (and easy to implement) support for the semantic web/linked data, like Wikibase or Semantic Mediawiki.

Ideally it would be great to have a SPARQL backend and to be able to query and to use linked data vocabularies, like Homosaurus, the Library of Congress Subject Headings, or something else.

It would be great to implement somrthing like semantic plugins for mediawiki, or "struct" or "data" plugins in dokuwiki. To allow linking some data to pages, quering data from pages or database and dispalying aggregations. Data could be linked as 'front-matter' dirictives or binded to a page according to specific schema.

This is perhaps a duplicate of the concept of 'template' but template can imply that the user can change the structure/sections after creating an instance of the template. In our use cases, the (non-admin) user should not be able to change the structure of a page with the exception of templates that are free-form.

John Clarke: I wouldn't see this as a duplicate of templates at all, because custom fields should be attachable to any content, and be queryable globally outside of the concept of "pages". But yes to this! I also would love to see not only custom fields but as you allude to, custom forms (that attach those fields to content)!
